National Portrait Gallery to reopen to the public on 22 June 2023

The National Portrait Gallery will reopen its doors for the first time since 2020, following the most extensive redevelopment of its building since 1896

The National Portrait Gallery in London has today announced that it will reopen its doors on 22 June 2023, following the most significant redevelopment in its history. Supported by longstanding supporter and Reopening Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills, visitors to the new National Portrait Gallery will experience a complete redisplay of the Collection, a transformational refurbishment of the building, as well as an enhanced welcome and greater access through the new Ross Place entrance.

The redevelopment project – titled Inspiring People – has included a comprehensive redisplay of the Gallery’s Collection from the Tudors to today, which will be displayed in beautifully refurbished galleries, and the restoration of the Grade I listed building and many historic features. The designs, by Jamie Fobert Architects working in partnership with Purcell, and thanks to the historic gift from the Blavatnik Family Foundation, will incorporate the Blavatnik Wing, the entire first floor encompassing nine galleries, which will explore society and culture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The designs will also see the return of the Gallery’s East Wing to public use as the Weston Wing, restoring original gallery spaces and creating new retail and catering facilities. The Gallery’s Ross Place entrance will create three new doors, converted from large windows, opening up the North Façade of the building in St Martin’s Place. A new Learning Centre will also welcome visitors of all ages with studios, breakout spaces, and high-quality facilities.

In addition to the Blavatnik Family Foundation gift, the Inspiring People project has been supported by a major grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, in addition to major donations from the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Ross Foundation, Mildred and Simon Palley, the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust, the David and Claudia Harding Foundation, Bjorn and Inger Saven, the Law Family Charitable Foundation, the Deborah Loeb Brice Foundation and Art Fund. Mit OPEN feiert die Heidi Horten Collection die Eröffnung ihrer neuen
Wirkungsstätte – einem eigens für die Sammlung geschaffenen Museum, das auf
Wunsch und Initiative der Kunstsammlerin Heidi Goëss-Horten entstand. Ihrer
Freude am Sammeln und ihrem Engagement ist es zu verdanken, dass sich nun ein
vormals unscheinbares Gebäude im Inneren des Hanuschhofs zum
unverwechselbaren Ort der Kunst im Herzen Wiens wandelt. Nahezu ein
Jahrhundert lang verschiedenen Zwischennutzungen zugeführt, erwarb Heidi
Goëss-Horten das Gebäude 2019 und beauftragte die Wiener Architekt*innen the
next ENTERprise Architects, unter der Leitung von Marie-Therese Harnoncourt-
Fuchs und Ernst J. Fuchs, die bestehende Architektur den Anforderungen eines
modernen Ausstellungshauses anzupassen. Nach lediglich zwanzigmonatiger
Bauzeit, in welcher der Ursprungsbau entkernt und ein Kellergeschoss hinzugefügt
wurden, empfängt das Museum seine ersten Besucherinnen und Besucher in einem
lichten Raum, in den zwei wie schwebend wirkende Ausstellungsebenen
eingezogen sind. Die Ausstellungsflächen sind gegeneinander versetzt, wodurch
sich immer wieder andere, überraschende Raumeindrücke ergeben.

Cloud Cities Barcelona

Tomás Saraceno’s first permanent interactive installation in southern Europe opens at Mirador Torre Glòries in Barcelona

Cloud Cities Barcelona, by artist Tomás Saraceno, invites participants into a space of communal encounter, discourse, and critical speculation, suspended at a height of over 130 meters over the city of Barcelona. Opening on May 20th, 2022, and housed in the 360° observation deck of Mirador Torre Glòries, it will be Saraceno’s first permanent interactive sculpture in southern Europe. The artwork occupies an area of 130m³ and is composed of 113 cloud spaces, like droplets of water condensing along the strands of a three-dimensional spider’s web, made of 5000 nodes connecting 6km of tensile cables.

Moving through the air at a height between 4 and 10m relative to the floor, or becoming enveloped by the atmosphere of the cupola’s apex, participants are offered a novel sensory experience, converting this observatory into a suspended realm from which to look inwards and outwards, to gather and dialogue, immersed in the multiplicity of worlds made manifest in the changing shapes of passing clouds. Wandering along paths of varying levels of complexity, participants can pause to find a rotating selection of books, in an invitation to inhabit shared time and consider alternative constellations of the urban public sphere, speculative architectures, the environmental crisis, and the entangled web of life.

For more than two decades, Saraceno has been imagining and activating a world free from fossil fuels, in collaboration with spiders and their webs, situated forms of knowledge, and with the vibrant superorganism that is the cosmic web, building an artistic practice of unprecedented variety and scale. Informed by the groundbreaking long-term research and curiosity of the international and interdisciplinary Aerocene and Arachnophilia communities, founded by Saraceno, Cloud Cities Barcelona invites participants into a porous cloudscape of tensions in suspension, to engage in collective critical reflections, activate zones of emergence, and reconsider worldwide networks of care.

In the midst of climate emergency, war, global pandemics, racial-ecocidal capitalism, social exclusion, and the proliferation of clouds of pollution and misinformation, Saraceno’s work addresses matters of environmental and social justice and envisions alternative ways of engaging with Earth’s atmosphere and interspecies ecology. Emerging from his long-standing artistic research "Cloud Cities", a proposal for a common imaginary for an ethical re-alliance with the environment, the planet, and the cosmic web beyond anthropocentrism, his cloud-shaped sculptures, reminiscent of the geometric Weaire-Phelan structure of foam and soap bubbles, act as an invitation to engage from diverse bearings, where there is neither up nor down, no inside or outside, and all is floating. As part of this series, Cloud Cities Barcelona challenges the verticality of the observatory’s distant gaze through alternative geometries of togetherness, so as to suspend social distances and collectively consider the multi-scalar threads of relation that weave our shared but threatened world and bind our interdependent fates. Erweiterung Kunsthaus Zürich: Betriebsaufnahme in 2021

Am 9. Oktober 2021 nimmt das erweiterte Kunsthaus Zürich den Betrieb auf.
Die von David Chipperfield Architects gestaltete Erweiterung macht das
Ensemble zum grössten Kunstmuseum der Schweiz. Sowohl in den
Bestandsbauten wie in der Erweiterung stösst das Publikum auf neue Werke
aus der Sammlung des Kunsthauses, entdeckt bisher selten zu sehende
private Kollektionen und erschliesst sich öffentliche Räume, die beeindrucken.
Das neue Kunsthaus bietet einen Mehrwert für Kunst und Publikum beiderseits
des Heimplatzes. Mit der Erweiterung wurden die öffentlichen Flächen mehr als
verdoppelt. Für die Kunst stehen 5000 m2 zusätzlich zur Verfügung und 330 m2
für Kunstvermittlung. Aus der eigenen Sammlung können nun mehr als 17
Prozent (bisher 10 Prozent) der Gemälde und Skulpturen gezeigt werden, dazu
Film und Fotografie, Werke auf Papier und Installationen.

Guggenheim Museum among Eight Buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright Inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List

(NEW YORK, NY—July 8, 2019)—The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of The 20^th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, which includes eight major works spanning fifty years of Wright’s career. The designation was announced at the World Heritage Committee meeting on July 7 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Wright is widely considered to be the greatest American architect of the 20^th century, and the sites in the group inscription span his influential career. They are Unity Temple (constructed 1906–09, Oak Park, Illinois), the Frederick C. Robie House (constructed 1910, Chicago), Taliesin (begun 1911, Spring Green, Wisconsin), Hollyhock House (constructed 1918–21, Los Angeles), Fallingwater (constructed 1936–39, Mill Run, Pennsylvania), the Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House (constructed 1936–37, Madison, Wisconsin), Taliesin West (begun 1938, Scottsdale, Arizona), and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (constructed 1956–59, New York).

There are more than 1,000 World Heritage sites around the world, and the group of Wright structures is now among only 24 sites in the US. The collection represents the first modern architecture designation in the country on the prestigious list.

Die Landesgalerie Niederösterreich

Ein neues Museum für das österreichische Kunstschaffen

Am 25. und 26. Mai 2019 eröffnete die Landesgalerie Niederösterreich als neues Museum für das österreichische Kunstschaffen. Sie wird damit zum Zentrum der Kunstmeile Krems, die mit ihren Ausstellungshäusern Kunsthalle Krems, Karikaturmuseum Krems und Forum Frohner vom Minoritenplatz in Stein über den Museumsplatz bis zur

Dominikanerkirche in Krems reicht.

Mit 3.000 m2 Ausstellungsfläche erstreckt sich das neue Ausstellungshaus auf fünf Ebenen und ist über das Untergeschoss mit der Kunsthalle Krems verbunden. Das Ausstellungsprogramm verbindet die Bestände der Landessammlungen Niederösterreich mit wichtigen Privatkollektionen –darunter etwa jene von Ernst Ploil und Helmut Zambo –und reagiert mit Themen-und Personalausstellungen auf Fragen der Gegenwart. Die Lebensrealität der Menschen ist Dreh-und Angelpunkt des Programms, das sämtliche Kunstgattungen umfasst und das Alte mit dem Neuen in Dialog setzt.Das neue Museum spiegelt Niederösterreich als Kunstlandschaft wider, die das europäische Kunstschaffen im Zusammenspiel mit Wien und den Nachbarländern einzigartig bereichert. Bis heute bildet sie den Lebensraum herausragender Künstlerinnen und Künstler.Auch architektonisch ist das neue Kunstmuseum der Vorarlberger Architekten Bernhard und Stefan Marte mit seiner einzigartigen Drehung ein Ausdruck der Gegenwart. Ein neues Bauhaus-Museum für Weimar

Eröffnung 6. April 2019

2019, wenn alle Welt die Gründung des Staatlichen Bauhauses vor 100 Jahren feiern wird, ist der 6. April das wichtigste Datum für Weimar und seine Gäste. An diesem Tag wird das Bauhaus-Museum Weimar nach dreijähriger Bauzeit eröffnen. Am Gründungsort des Bauhauses wird es als moderner Ort der Begegnung, Offenheit und Diskussion an die frühe Weimarer Phase der bedeutendsten Design- und Kunstschule des 20. Jahrhunderts erinnern. Es inszeniert die Schätze der weltweit ältesten Bauhaus-Sammlung und verknüpft Bauhaus-Geschichte mit Fragen zur Lebensgestaltung von Heute und Morgen. Der Museumsbau von Prof. Heike Hanada entsteht in direkter Nachbarschaft zur sogenannten Grün-, Kultur- und Sportachse als ein großes „Kulturprojekt“ der Weimarer Republik, dem ehemaligen „Gauforum“ aus nationalsozialistischer Zeit sowie dem „Langen Jakob“, ein in den 1970er-Jahren entstandenes Studentenwohnheim. The Shed Announces Opening Date of April 5, 2019, and Four Additional Opening Season Commissions

disciplines, for all audiences, will launch its opening season on April 5, 2019

New York City’s new arts center, designed for 21st-century artists and audiences, will present world premiere works in the performing arts, visual arts, and popular culture in its innovative, movable building when it opens its doors to the public on Manhattan’s west side. Poots also announced the honorary naming of The Shed’s building and two of its major spaces in recognition of visionary supporters of the project, four additional artistic commissions for the first half of the opening season, and information about operating hours and tickets.
